The apocolypse has already happened. The worst is already past. Most of the population of the world is now dead, dying, or zombies. Survivors are few and far between, flocking to safe points for food and shelter until they can no more. There's rumors of a larger human population up north, but those are just legends now. No one who has gone for the city has come back.
You live in what used to be Dallas. The heat here is perfect for zombies to thrive, and having used up any resources, you want to head north, to the legendary City of Hope. Supposedly there's food, protection, and shelter, and it's enough for you to go in search of it. But you aren't the only one. You reside with a group of people, in a band called The Envoy. It's a popular band and is often called upon to barter or to join. But now you have nothing, and it's time for you to leave.
You pull out a map and look at it. The planner of the group has planned a route for you to take. You don'tk now if it's the best route, but it's the best you could do with the information you have (which is, of course, months old. Contact is few and far between).
Going straight north would be too easy. Short, yeah, but the midwest is crawling with zombie citizens. It would be hell getting there without a well protected armada, and The Envoy only has a few well armored tanks. These tanks can't hold much and their ammo is very limited, so they're mostly good for stashing valuables. Instead, your caravan has decided to head east, heading up along the east coast of the US until you can cross over to Canada. Based on the legends, the City of Hope lies somewhere in the middle north. It'll be cold, for sure, but supposedly, this coldness keeps the zombies at bay.
And any chance of fewer zombies is something you have to risk.
